Domestic Violence Questions... Answered!

Question 1: My boyfriend assaulted me last night. We had a big fight when I came home from work and he hit me several times. I called the police but he left before they arrived. How can I protect myself?

Answer: First, do whatever you need to do to stay safe, even if you have to hide from him.

Second, get any medical attention you might need.

Third, take pictures that you can reproduce of any injuries you sustained. You may need to do this over a period of several days as bruising progresses.

Fourth, cooperate with the police as requested. Do not take his word that “he’ll never do it again.” Chances are that he will.

Fifth, you may want to talk to the District Attorney’s Office about getting a Protective Order. They will not charge you for their help and they can evaluate your case for you.

Finally, if the domestic violence has happened to you more than once, you might benefit from some counseling. Contact your area’s women’s shelter for assistance.
